Composite Decks

Composite decks are a popular alternative to traditional wood decks. They are made from a combination of wood fibers and plastic. They only require washing one or two times a year for typically maintenance and come with a 2 – 7 year labor warranty and a 25 – 50 year material warranty. Composite decks result in a durable and low-maintenance deck.

Raised Decks

Raised decks are a popular feature in many homes, they are typically constructed above ground level, supported by a system of posts and beams. They can offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape, whether it be a sprawling backyard, a garden, or a scenic vista. Raised Decks require stairs and railings for safety and security.

Wooden Decks

The most common wood deck surfaces are cedar, pressure-treated and exotic hardwoods. To prevent moisture buildup, mold growth, and damage from weather elements some maintenance is required, regular cleaning and sealing (staining or painting). Homeowners should inspect their decks periodically to check for signs of cracks, splits, and rot, and address any issues to prevent further damage.

PVC Decks

PVC deck with topless glass railing

PVC Decks are made from 100% polyvinyl chloride (PVC), this decking material is engineered to resist moisture, insects, and rot, making it an ideal option for outdoor use. PVC doesn’t contain any wood fibers, therefor it doesn’t absorb moisture. PVC decking can become hot in the summer months, homeowners may want to install a shade cover such as a pergola or a cover (awning).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between wood and composite decking?

Wood decks are commonly constructed out of natural wood materials, such as cedar, pressure-treated and exotic hardwood. Composite decking is made of a blend of wood fibers and plastic. Composite decking is typically more durable and requires less maintenance than wood decking and comes with a 25 – 50 year warranty. You can compare the two composite materials by clicking here.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a deck can vary depending on size, material, and llabor costs. On average, the cost to build a deck can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more.  To read more about the different considerations of a decks cost, click here.

Are permits required to build a deck?

Permit requirements can vary depending on your location, size and height of your deck. Most often if the finished deck height is not greater than 24″ you do not require a building permit. Generally, a cover that will prevent rain and snow from touching the deck surface will require a building permit. Some cities and municipalities have size limits, allowing the construction of a cover with size limitations. XMT Construction communicates with the building department of your city or town about these details. If you would like to learn more about permits and deck building, click here.

How often should I clean and maintain my deck?

Regular cleaning and maintenance can help prolong the life of your deck. Wood decks of any material should be cleaned and sealed annually, while composite or PVC decks require less maintenance and typically only need to be washed 1 or 2 times per annum. Learn more about maintaining your deck by clicking here.

How long does a deck last?

The lifespan of a deck can vary depending on factors such as materials, maintenance, and weather conditions. Wood decks typically last around 10 to 15 years, while composite decks can last 25 years or more with proper maintenance. How long will your deck last?

What brands of composite decking do you install?

We install TimberTech, Trex and Azek. Azek is a PVC material and a sister company to TimberTech.
